25/10/2015
Four new species of crab found at Kerala coast.Researchers have named them as Paguristes luculentus , Diogenes canaliculatus, Pagurus spinossior, Afropinnotheres ratnakara. The first three belongs to the hermit crab family and the last one belong to pinnotherid crab family.

Crabs are crustaceans, having an exterior skeleton or shell.
Hermit crab:
  • Hermit crabs are ubiquitous animals often not considered to be ‘true’ crabs as they lack an external shell on their soft abdomen which leaves them vulnerable to predators.
  • So they live in abandoned snail shells to protect themselves and often select larger shells as they grow up.
