What it is:
- India at the COP21(of UNFCC) has launched a global initiative, called ISA.It is an invitation to almost 120 countries(mostly Afro-Asian and south American) living in tropics and sub-tropics.
- With the aim of collective ambition, ISA is combination of countries and large industry houses to form a global alliance to provide clean and affordable energy to millions of people living in developing and underdeveloped countries.
Features:
- Indian government will be investing around $30m in setting up alliance’s headquarters in India.
- Companies like Areva,Tata,HSBC France, Engie,Enel will be partner of this alliance.
- Some of the Europian countries like France have shown interest to become a part of this.
How it is important:
- Shared technology ,larger markets ,combined funding will lead to lower cost and will connect citizens to cheap energy resource.
- Since most of the Tropical countries are underdeveloped(African) and developing(Asian and Latin American),the presented alliance would be bigger help to marginalised poor people.
- Since solar technology is evolving ,cost is coming down and grid connectivity is also improving, so it present a great opportunity to India to fulfil its pledge of drawing 40% of electricity from renewable resources by 2033.
- It would also help India to achieve the target of 175GW green energy by 2022.
- India’s most of the coal fired power plants are old therefore many developed countries questioned its developmental process and oppose India’s argument of CBDR(Common but Differentiated Responsibility). Thus India’s this initiative shows its sensitiveness against climate change and global warming.
