According to researchers Tibetan plateau is warming at twice the global
average due to global warming leading to accelerated melting of glaciers.
How Tibetan plateau is important for India:
- Tibetan plateau having a large geographical area used to heat up during summer thus creates atmospheric circulation which is useful for monsoon.
- Also act as a tall barrier, preventing cold, dry air in the northern latitudes from entering the subcontinent and subduing the warm, moisture-laden winds from the oceans that drive the monsoon.
- Further it is a source of thousands of small and larger rivers(Saraswati and Brahmaputra) there by providing huge resource for livelihood.
- Tibet located at strategic position ,act as a buffer zone between India and China so any receding of glaciers might be dangerous for Indian security.
- It is often called as ‘Third pole’ because it is having the third largest storage of fresh water on earth(except North and South pole.).So any change in its physical structure will hamper the global accessible water budget.
What Could
be done:
- Need a collective action involving all stakeholder(i.e. governments ,civil society, people etc.) and should be focused on mitigating climate change.
- It would require reduction in GHG(green house gases) adoption of renewable energy.
- Raising it as an important agenda in coming Paris meet would be a positive step.
