India State of Forest Report 2015: Post-mortem 1.1

What it is:
  • Biennial report(since 1987) published by Forest Survey of India(FSI).
  • Describes forest and tree cover ,growing stock within and outside of the forest,carbon stock.
  • So far 13 such reports have been published and this one is the 14th assessment.
  • Forest cover assessment is carried out using remote sensing technology.

Involved terminology:

Forest cover and Recorded Forest cover(forest area)-

Forest cover
Refer to all lands which have
-more than 1 hectare in area and

-tree canopy of more than 10% irrespective of land use,ownership and legal status.

-may include orchards,bamboo,palm etc.

-plantations on private lands,community lands,roads,canal etc(if they fulfil the condition of forest cover)


RFA(forest areas)
Refer to all geographical areas recored as ‘forest’ in government records.

-include Reserved forest(RF) and protected forest(PF) constituted under Indian forest Act,1927.

-also include any areas recorded under any state or local law.

-include areas with tree canopy less than 10%(degraded lands,creeks in mangroves,wetlands,riverbeds,rivers,snow-covered areas,galciars,alpine pastures,cold desert,grasslands)

PF :>Himanchal Pradesh>M.P >C.G>Jharkhand>Rajasthan

RFA as percent of geographical area(total is 23.26% of geographical area)::A & N islands>Sikkim>Manipur>Uttarakhand>Himanchal Pradesh>Arunachal Pradesh

Forest cover under current assessment:

  • Total forest cover is 21.34% of geographical area.
  • Forest cover include


State/UT wise forest cover:

---Area wise:M.P. >Arunachal pradesh>C.G.>Maharashtra >Odisha

---Geographical area wise:Mizoram>Lakshadweep>A&N islands>Arunanchal Pradesh >Nagaland

---  ---------> have more than 75% of forest cover as percentage of their geographical area.

Between 2013-15 there has been increase of 3775sq km of forest cover in country.
